Our campaign to plant 1000+ native trees in the Hythe area, as part of our Hythe Town Council Climate Emergency declaration action plan, is in full swing! Our Green town and district councillor, Jim Martin, and a number of other councillors and volunteers, have been busy planting along the north bank of the Royal Military Canal between Seabrook School and the Sea Road bridge. Working to a plan agreed with the District Council’s Canal officer and tree officer, the gaps in the trees along the Canal will be filled in with new trees. The idea is to increase habitat for birds and insects.
The trees all come from the Woodlands Trust and are part of their community planting programme. They are a mix of indigenous species: Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Pussy Willow, Hazel, Rowan, Holly, Crab Apple, Silver Birch and Oak. Others are being planted at Eaton Lands and we are assessing the suitability of other sites.
In addition to the planting, we are making trees available for free to local residents. Quite a few have already taken up the offer – contact Jim if you’d like to do the same – j.martin@hythe-tc.gov.uk
