Folkestone & Hythe District Council – North Downs East

Cabinet Member for Climate, Environment and Bio Diversity

I came to Kent from Hertfordshire in the early 1970s to study at the University of Kent where I studied philosophy and history. After a spell in London, I returned to work as a teacher in Dover and Canterbury and to pursue my career as an educational author. I moved to Acrise (between Densole and Elham) with my wife in 2003. I have a step son who lives in Singapore, a brother in New Zealand and a nephew in the Republic of Georgia.

I have worked for many years as a teacher educator at Canterbury Christ Church University focusing especially on primary school geography and environmental studies. Although retired, I still have an active role in the University supporting its research and activities on climate change, sustainability and education. I have also written a range of teaching guides and textbooks and am an established school atlas author/consultant. In 2018-19 I was elected as the President of the Geographical Association – the association which represents geography teachers across the country. –

I have always been interested in the environment and local history. My wife and myself are keen walkers and we have explored nearly all the paths and by ways in the district. We are very much aware of the changes that are happening all around us and the threats to the countryside. It is now clear that what is happening here is happening in many other parts of the world as well, with disastrous consequences.

I joined the Green Party some five years ago because I wanted to make a difference and do what I could to bring about positive change. This involves not only protecting nature but also promoting human health and well-being. As a councillor I will be focusing on the welfare of people of all ages across the district, supporting initiatives and partnerships that strengthen local communities, enhance biodiversity and address climate change.
