Malcolm Watkinson is our Green Party candidate for Romney Marsh in the Kent County Council elections on 6th May. Malcolm writes:
“Obviously everyone’s minds have been on the pandemic for more than a year now but the other crisis facing us is the climate emergency.
“Being a coastal community we’re acutely aware of the risk from flooding but the climate emergency threatens the district in many ways, including the loss of biodiversity. I am an enthusiastic advocate of energy efficiency and low carbon technologies, having installed solar hot water heating and low energy underfloor heating at my house in New Romney and heat pumps to replace gas heating at the local engineering company I run.
“The message I would take to the county council is that it is possible to protect the environment and local businesses as we emerge from the pandemic, through a Green Recovery that prioritises the wellbeing of the planet and the people.
“As a long-time member of the organising committee for the district’s Green Party, I’ve seen at first hand our success at Town, District and County elections and the difference it has made having a Green voice on these councils. Now more than ever it is vital that we continue to have that voice at county level, to speak up for better, greener public transport, more cycling and walking infrastructure and protection for our open spaces.
“Romney Marsh is a unique part of our district and our county and needs a Green voice to speak up for it at Kent County Council.”
